Overview
AtlantiCare Health System is seeking an accomplished surgeon and visionary physician leader to oversee clinical, educational, and strategic operations for our Cardiothoracic Surgery Program and Heart and Vascular Institute. This dual leadership role offers the opportunity to drive innovation, quality, and multidisciplinary teamwork in one of New Jersey’s premier tertiary care environments.
Leadership Responsibilities
- Provide overall leadership and strategic direction for the Cardiothoracic Surgery program and collaborate with system executives to advance the Heart and Vascular Institute’s vision and operations.
- Oversee and develop clinical, research, and educational programs, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and cultivating a culture of clinical excellence, patient safety, and continuous improvement.
- Mentor, recruit, and support medical staff, residents, fellows, and advanced practice providers, ensuring a high-performing, engaged, and cohesive team.
- Establish evidence-based protocols, best-practice models, and quality improvement initiatives throughout the division while ensuring regulatory compliance and accreditation standards are met.
- Strengthen community and regional referral networks, developing strategic partnerships to expand access to advanced cardiac care and position AtlantiCare as a leading center for complex cardiothoracic surgical services.
Clinical and Programmatic Duties
- Evaluate, manage, and operate on patients requiring advanced and complex cardiothoracic procedures, including minimally invasive and traditional surgical techniques as listed below:
- Aortic Valve Repair and Replacement (AVR)
- Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG)
- Aortic Repair
- Maze Procedure for Atrial Fibrillation
- Left Atrial Appendage (LAA) Closure (including WATCHMAN device)
- Hybrid Ablation (Minimally Invasive)
- Mitral Valve Repair/Replacement
- Long term LVAD placement
- Supervise and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team including the CTICU, Cardiothoracic Physician Assistants, nursing, anesthesia, and the Structural Heart Team.
- Maintain and oversee scheduling, efficient resource allocation, and program development in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Ensure quality clinical outcomes and lead morbidity and mortality conferences, as well as targeted cardiac surgery-specific quality improvement programs.
- Develop, review, and implement cardiac surgery protocols, pathways, and policies to consistently deliver exceptional care to diverse patient populations.
- Academic, Research, and Community Engagement
- Lead or participate in clinical and translational research activities, clinical trials, and publications relevant to cardiac and cardiovascular surgery.
- Engage in teaching activities for medical students, residents, and fellows within the health system.
- Represent the Heart and Vascular Institute in medical education, community outreach, and fundraising events to promote awareness and support programmatic growth.
Qualifications
- MD or DO from an accredited institution
- Board certification or eligibility in Cardiothoracic Surgery
- Academic experience with evidence of teaching, program development, and clinical scholarship preferred.
- Eligible for or active New Jersey medical license
- Demonstrated record of excellence in advanced cardiothoracic surgical procedures and programmatic leadership
- Excellent communication, teamwork, and collaborative leadership abilities
