Sleep Physician within the Department of Neurology at BNI in Phoenix Barrow Neurological Institute (BNI) in Phoenix, Arizona, is a focused neuroscience institute and internationally recognized leader in neurology, neurosurgery, and neuroradiology. Barrow has a traditional tripartite academic mission of providing patient-centered care, training the next generation of physician leaders, and conducting clinically relevant research. Drawing patients from the entire United States, Mexico, Canada, and worldwide, BNI has 13 subspecialties in Neurovascular and Stroke disorders, Epilepsy, Headache, Sports Neurology and Traumatic Brain Injury, Neuro-Ophthalmology, Neuro-Oncology, Neuro-Otology, Movement Disorders, Neuromuscular Diseases, Alzheimer’s Disease and Cognitive Disorders, Neurocritical Care, Neuroimmunology, Neuroendocrinology, and Sleep. Our neurologists work closely with over 30 neurosurgeons and 30 PhD and MD scientists in a facility that is uniquely state-of-the-art. All BNI faculty hold academic title appointments with University of Arizona College of Medicine–Phoenix and Creighton University School of Medicine.
Join a Neurology Department comprised of over 60 faculty members and a vibrant neurology residency program and subspecialty fellowships. The Department includes large, outpatient state-of-the-art facilities and a vast array of clinical resources, including a dedicated outpatient neurology infusion center, neuropsychology, social work, physical therapy, occupational therapy, recreational therapy, speech therapy, and acclaimed community outreach programs. Job summary:
The successful candidate may be either a clinician-educator or clinician-scientist and will be expected to have a major role in clinical and/or translational research activities. Work with an experienced, highly skilled, and comprehensive team of neurological specialists at Barrow Neurological Institute/St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center within our growing Comprehensive Sleep Center. The program serves a diverse, medically complex population and supports advanced diagnostics and therapies, including in-lab polysomnography (adult), home sleep apnea testing, PAP titration and adherence optimization, actigraphy, MSLT/MWT, and multidisciplinary management pathways for insomnia, circadian rhythm disorders, parasomnias (including RBD), sleep-related movement disorders, and sleep-related breathing disorders. Our team includes advanced practice providers, registered respiratory therapists, dedicated sleep technologists, registered nurses, program coordinators, behavioral sleep medicine collaborators, and a multidisciplinary therapy network. This is an exciting opportunity to collaborate across Neurology (Stroke, Movement Disorders, Cognitive, Neurocritical Care), Primary Care, Pulmonology, Otolaryngology, Dentistry, and Behavioral Health to deliver comprehensive sleep care.
Specific duties:
We evaluate and treat common and rare sleep disorders including obstructive and central sleep apnea, insomnia disorders (with integration of CBT-I), circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders, hypersomnolence disorders (e.g., narcolepsy, idiopathic hypersomnia), parasomnias (including RBD), and sleep-related movement disorders (e.g., RLS/PLMD).
Duties include:
Ambulatory care and occasional inpatient consultation (e.g., peri-stroke and neuro-ICU sleep concerns, PAP management, circadian/sedation optimization).
Scholarly activity, including independent research, collaborative research projects, quality improvement, or clinical trials.
Teaching medical students, residents, sleep fellows, nurses, and advanced practice providers. We function as a highly cohesive and collaborative division with an expectation of camaraderie, teamwork, and professionalism.
Job specifications:
Applicants must be Board Certified or Board Eligible in Sleep Medicine (neurology training is strongly preferred within the Department of Neurology but other multidisciplinary backgrounds will be included). Completion of an ACGME-accredited Sleep Medicine Fellowship and Board Certification/Eligibility in Sleep Medicine by an ABMS member board (e.g., ABPN/ABIM/ABFM/ABPeds). Demonstrated proficiency in interpretation of PSG, HSAT, MSLT/MWT, PAP titration studies, and actigraphy.
Experience or interest in non-PAP therapies (e.g., oral appliance pathways, positional therapy), perioperative PAP optimization, surgical treatment for sleep apnea (e.g., neuromodulation therapy), RBD/neurodegenerative biomarker partnerships, and insomnia/circadian care is required.
Additional preferred skills (not required): experience with digital health/remote monitoring for PAP adherence. The ability to obtain a State of Arizona medical license at the time of employment is required. BNI academic rank and track will match the applicant’s qualifications.
